Why exterior painting is mostly preparation
A Melbourne facade takes hard sun, cold nights, wind-driven rain and, closer to the bay, salt in the air. Paint applied over chalky, flaking or unsealed surfaces will look excellent for a season and then let go in sheets — usually starting on the north and west walls.
So the bulk of an exterior job is spent scraping, sanding, filling and priming. Only once the surface is sound and sealed do finish coats go on, in premium exterior systems from Dulux and Australian family-owned Haymes Paint.

Weatherboards
Old boards move, cup and shed coatings unevenly. Loose paint comes off, edges are feathered back, bare timber is primed and boards are coated including the lower edge where water sits.
Rendered and masonry walls
Render is checked for hairline cracking, blown patches and efflorescence, cleaned down, sealed where porous, then coated in a flexible exterior membrane or acrylic system.
Timber windows and doors
Sashes, sills, jambs and thresholds sanded back, failed putty and gaps made good, bare timber primed, then finished so windows and doors still open and close.
Eaves, fascias and trims
Cleaned of dust, cobwebs and mould, sealed where stained, and recoated along with barge boards, verandah posts, brackets and fretwork.
Scraping, sanding, filling and priming
The same sequence on every exterior job, adjusted to the condition of each elevation.
- 01Set up: drop sheets, plant and window protection, safe stable access to every elevation.
- 02Wash down to remove dirt, chalking, mould and salt residue so coatings bond.
- 03Scrape all loose and flaking paint back to a sound, stable edge.
- 04Sand to feather scraped edges and key existing coatings.
- 05Fill minor surface defects — nail holes, small splits, open joints and gaps.
- 06Prime every section of bare timber, and spot-prime rust or stained areas.
- 07Undercoat where required, particularly over filler, primer and colour changes.
- 08Two premium exterior finish coats in a Dulux or Haymes exterior system.
- 09Clean-up and a walkthrough of every elevation with you before completion.
Working on older paintwork where lead paint may be present
Paint containing lead was used on Australian homes for much of last century, particularly on exterior timber — weatherboards, windows, doors and trims. That does not mean every older house has it. It does mean old coatings should not be treated like ordinary modern paint and attacked with aggressive dry sanding.

- What is the best time of year to paint a house exterior in Melbourne?
- Spring and autumn are usually the easiest, but exterior work runs most of the year here. What matters more than the season is the day: surfaces need to be dry, temperatures within the product's range, and enough time before dew or rain for the coat to set.
- Do you pressure clean before painting?
- Where the surface suits it, yes. Some older timber and lifting paint is better washed by hand, because high pressure drives water behind boards and can strip more than intended. The cleaning method is decided surface by surface.
- How do you handle rotten or badly perished timber?
- It is identified at quote stage and shown to you. Small defects are filled as part of normal preparation; boards or sills that are past repair are best replaced before painting, and we tell you that up front rather than coating over a problem.
- Do I need to paint eaves and fascias if only the walls look tired?
- Not always, but they usually fail first because they trap moisture and sit in shade. If the trims are sound they can be left, and if they are not, painting the walls alone tends to make them look worse.
- Can you paint over previously painted brick or render?
- Yes, provided the existing coating is sound. Areas that are peeling or blistering are removed back to a stable edge and the exposed substrate sealed, otherwise the new coating simply lifts with the old one.
