Wash the exterior

Remove loose and flaking paint to a firmly bonded edge without gouging the board.
Sand and feather edges

Repair suitable defects
Address stable holes and open joints with exterior-grade materials while allowing for normal timber movement and drainage.
Spot-prime bare timber

Warning signs requiring closer assessment
- Grey, fibrous timber is exposed beneath failed paint.
- Boards feel soft, split deeply or remain damp after suitable drying weather.
- Paint failure is concentrated near joints, sills, gutters or ground level.
- Old coating produces suspect dust or chips and has not been tested for lead.
Lead-safe preparation on older coatings
Previously painted timber on older homes may contain lead-based layers. Testing guides the preparation method; it is not appropriate to assume every old coating contains lead or that none does.
