Why timber-window coatings fail
Window components expand and contract as moisture and temperature change. North- and west-facing windows also receive strong UV, while sills and lower rails are exposed to water and slower drying.
Aged coating becomes less flexible over time. If loose layers, glossy surfaces, contamination or bare end grain were not prepared correctly, later coats may release with the weak layer beneath them.
Assess the timber before choosing a repair
Probe suspect areas gently and inspect sills, lower corners, joints, glazing lines and end grain. Surface peeling over firm timber is different from deep softness, open joinery or persistent moisture.

Find the moisture path
Check joints, glazing, sills and nearby drainage before treating paint failure as only a coating problem.

Repair suitable defects

Prime exposed timber
Protect bare areas and end grain with a suitable primer before applying compatible finish coats.
Keep moving parts clear
Plan sash and frame coating so windows can operate and drainage paths are not sealed shut.
Warning signs that need more than repainting
- Timber is soft, crumbling or deeply split around sills and joints.
- Moisture returns after apparently dry weather or paint blisters repeatedly.
- Sashes bind because joinery is distorted rather than because of a simple paint edge.
- Large areas of old coating are unstable or suspected to contain lead.
