How we choose between Dulux and Haymes
On interior work, Dulux Wash&Wear is a long-standing choice for family homes and high-traffic areas, while Haymes Expressions is a premium interior system we specify regularly as well. On exteriors, Dulux Weathershield and Haymes Solashield are both designed for harsh Australian conditions and both perform well on Melbourne homes.
The choice on a given project comes down to four practical considerations:
- Substrate condition — weathered timber, new plaster, previously enamelled trims and chalky render each call for a specific primer and topcoat pairing, and one brand's system often suits a particular substrate better for that job.
- Exterior exposure — a shaded south wall in Kingsville and a salt-exposed windward wall in Williamstown have very different demands; the product is matched to the exposure, not the other way around.
- Interior room use — bathrooms, kitchens, hallways and bedrooms need different washability and mould-resistance levels, which points to specific products within each range.
- Project requirements — colour matching, existing coatings on the home, and the finish the owner wants all feed into which system we specify.
What matters more than the brand on the tin
Here's the part most comparison articles skip. The long-term durability of a paint job is determined far more by these factors than by which of two quality brands you pick:
- Surface preparation — scraping, sanding, cleaning, filling and sealing. A premium topcoat over poor preparation fails; a well-prepared surface makes either brand perform.
- Correct primer and undercoat selection — bare timber, stains, patches, gloss surfaces and new plaster each need the right primer. This decision changes the life of the job more than the topcoat does.
- Sheen choice — flat, low sheen, semi-gloss and gloss behave very differently for durability, washability and how they show imperfections. Matching sheen to the room or surface is a professional decision, not an afterthought.
- Application quality — correct film build, drying time between coats, and painting in suitable weather conditions (critical in Melbourne) protect the investment either brand represents.
A note on 'premium' claims
You won't see lab-test tables or invented specifications here — we compare products the way professionals actually do: by how they perform on real walls, in real weather, over real years. Both Dulux and Haymes have earned their reputations in the Australian trade, and both back their professional ranges properly.
If a painter insists one brand is the only acceptable choice for every surface on your home, ask why. The honest answer is usually 'it depends on the surface' — and that's the answer you want.
